Board Certified Pediatric Dentists
Dentistry for Kids
Having good oral health is something that most children and parents neglect nowadays. Did you know that your babies should regularly visit their dentists at least once or twice a year? Preferably, ages 6 months to 1 year, should start getting dental checkups regularly after their first tooth has come out. However, parents can also start them at 1 year old.
As parents, it is vital to teach your child good oral health and hygiene, since they’ll be doing all of these until they grow old.
Kids who’ve visited for their dental care regularly from a young age were found to have stronger and healthier primary “baby” teeth. Though these aren’t their permanent teeth, they still should be well taken care of until they’re replaced.

Dentistry for Kids - Services We Offer
Children should start their regular dental checkups as soon as their first “baby teeth” appears. This is because cavities can progress very rapidly. We know that in this age, most of them love to eat sweets and sweets equals cavities. If cavities were treated at an early stage, the damage is easier to repair. However, the opposite also applies.
Fortunately for worried parents, our clinic provides a long selection of kids dentistry services.
What We will do during a check-up is make a thorough oral examination and comprehensive evaluation of their eating and brushing habits. To bring back your child’s pearly white teeth, they need to undergo dental prophylaxis. It’s a dental procedure where we thoroughly clean your child’s gums and teeth. Then, using special tools and equipment, our experts will clean your kid’s their teeth until all the dirt is gone and all that’s left are white and shiny teeth.
In some cases, patients are asked to have parts of their mouth or teeth x-rayed. Dental x-rays are also necessary in examining your child’s oral health. These are most useful in showing problematic areas which aren’t immediately seen in regular oral examination. These also help dentists in monitoring their permanent teeth development. In addition, these x-rays can also reveal growing cysts and tumors, even in their early stages.
Did you know that the pits and grooves in our teeth are normal? These are what traps plaque and other bacteria that were not removed by normal brushing or rinsing. These trapped plaques and bacteria causes cavities and we don’t want that in our teeth. Once your mouth has accumulated a lot of bacteria, they will form an acidic byproduct that will produce “holes” or what we know as cavities on our teeth.
Good thing there are ‘sealants’ which are made from tough, plastic-like material (like resin) that can stick to the tooth’s pits and grooves. This sealant is painted over the surface of the teeth to protect them from plaque and bacteria which causes cavities.
In a recent study, results have shown that using sealants in combination with maintaining good oral hygiene have reduced the formation of new cavities by 50%.
For cases of teeth with cavities, our dentists will need to remove the weakened part of the tooth as well as disinfect it from any bacterial infection. Then the tooth will be filled with the sealant, therefore protecting it from further cavity development.
For extreme cases of tooth damage, a dental crown or a “cap”, will be used to cover the tooth. It will provide additional support and cover the severely decayed teeth. Once the decayed area is removed, the tooth will be shaped to fit the crown.
These crowns are specifically made for children and are quite different from what we use for adults. Basically, we can place these on a kid’s tooth in just one appointment unlike for the adults. These are very durable because they can cover the entire tooth. This full coverage completely seals and strengthens the remaining tooth structure.
For deep tooth decay, we recommend using 'pulpotomies’, especially when the cavities have already reached the nerve of the baby tooth. In cases like this, the dentist will have to take away the infected tissue and treat the area with some medicine. This will hasten the recovery of the nerve tissues. This kind of procedure is much easier to apply since they’re simpler as compared to that of adults.
In addition, we also provide space maintainers to children. These are devices made of acrylic and metal. These are designed to prepare ample space for their permanent teeth to grow after the premature loss of their “baby” tooth. These space maintainers will enable your kids to grow up without worrying about getting any orthodontic problems caused by losing their baby tooth too early.
Tooth extractions have been done as a last resort for treating decayed or damaged tooth. This procedure is reserved only for teeth, which we can no longer restore. During the extraction, we will evaluate their need to use space maintainers or not.

Cavity in Children - fillings, crowns caps
Not all kids are fond of going to the dentist. In fact, it can be a traumatic experience for some of them if not treated carefully. However, it is also during this time that cavities start to develop in children.
What should you expect when taking your babyto the dental clinic?
For regular checkups, your dentist or oral hygienist will do some routine examination procedures in a child-friendly manner. They’ll also try to keep your kids entertained and distracted by showing them the different tools that the we will use. This method will help put them at ease as well as helping in setting their expectations. If there is a need to use anesthetic, our experts will apply a numbing gel first onto the affected area. This will prevent them from feeling the pain caused by the needle.
Meanwhile, for extremely nervous kids with multiple cavities, we may use nitrous oxide to help reduce their anxiety. This will also distract them from feeling the pain from the Novocaine shot in their gums and the drilling procedure. However, Nitrous Oxide is not suitable for all children so we may recommend taking an oral sedative as an alternative.
As soon as the affected area has become numb, the dentist will now start cleaning the decay of their tooth using a drill and/or a scraping tool. Using a suction tool, the doctor’s assistant will remove any water and debris from the mouth. In this way, the tooth is clean and dry, allowing them to stay comfortable until the end of the procedure.
When the decay is finally removed, we will then start covering the hole using a filling. This can either be amalgam, which has a silver color or the composite, which has the same color as natural teeth. Afterwards, we will ask your child to bite down to see if their teeth will meet together nicely. If everything looks good, the dentist will ask him/her to rinse their mouth then the procedure is done.
Your dentist will talk to you about any post treatment recommendations. You can also schedule your kid’s next appointment if necessary. This whole procedure takes no longer than half an hour.

Sedation Dentistry
We know how parents feel whenever their children would receive dental sedation. Don’t worry because we place high importance in our patient safety and we’ll not do anything to jeopardize it. In some cases, our dentists may recommend using sedatives for long and complicated procedures. They may also use this for patients who are especially young or are extremely nervous.
We’d like to ensure our patients that using sedatives during a procedure is practically safe and normal. It also helps lessen the risks as well as mental and physical stress from their kids before, during and after the treatment.
What happens to a patient that is sedated? The patient’s blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, temperature and heart rate are being closely monitored. Aside from the usual dental procedures, our staff is expertly-trained and highly experienced in the administration of sedatives during complex procedures.
This includes using Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as the “laughing gas”, to make your kids feel more comfortable and less nervous. Though our doctors will still determine whether it is advisable to use this or resort to an alternative oral sedative. Furthermore, we also have Oral Sedatives, IV Moderate Sedatives.
Other than that, we also give general anesthesia to uncooperative children who cannot tolerate procedures done in regular checkup settings. Sedatives work by helping the patient to relax before or during the dental procedure. General anesthesia on the other hand, works by getting the patient completely unconscious.
Sedatives like the Nitrous Oxide relaxes the body but it also wears off quite easily.
To further guarantee our patient safety, we require the child’s parent to be present during the entire procedure. They need to be there before we administer the sedative as well as when they wakes up. Usually, they wake up feeling confused or fuzzy while others may feel a bit nauseous.
Once the child’s mouth has fully recovered. He or she can now continue as normal – taking care of their teeth through regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups. Using fluoride-based toothpaste will protect your teeth from cavities.

Clear Braces
This kind of braces is made from translucent ceramic with an “arc wire” as its backbone. It’s a strong steel wire that runs along the teeth inside the jaw. It exerts pressure in specific areas through these ceramic brackets which are placed carefully on each tooth. This pressure from the arch wire is transmitted to the teeth causing them to move slowly. These brackets are attached to the teeth using orthodontic bands or by directly bonding them onto the teeth. Spacers or Space Maintainers are placed in the mouth to create enough space between the teeth for the orthodontic bands.
If the patient is not satisfied with the metallic look of the stainless-steel wire, they can ask their dentist to replace it with frosted, tooth colored, or colored wires.
The corrective method of clear or ceramic braces is similar to the traditional wire braces. The primary part is the arch wire that passes across the teeth from one end to another in one jaw (upper or lower).
The dentist will be the one to adjust the pressure level of these braces. The pressure allows the teeth to move in the right direction slowly without any obvious pain. As the teeth moves, the pressure is released. The arch wire needs to be re-adjusted regularly to initiate further movement until the desired position of the teeth is finally achieved. Readjusting braces are normally done at least once a month or every two weeks depending on what our experts has recommended.
The entire process will last at least 1 to 4 years, depending on the severity of the patient’s case as well as his or her age. When the braces have moved the teeth successfully to their designed alignment, your dental surgeon may recommend wearing plastic retainers or tooth guards in the meantime.

Invisalign
As for patients who are not fond of wearing braces on their teeth, we have what we call the “Invisalign Clear Aligners”. Similar to braces, these are also designed to put pressure on your teeth when they are worn. Invisalign are sets of removable, clear, plastic aligners which you can put on both your upper and lower jaw. Wearing these will also help to straighten your crooked or misaligned teeth.
What’s different is that these are not attached to your teeth and they can be easily removed, especially when you’re eating, speaking or brushing your teeth.
For interested patients, we’ll provide you with a set of clear Invisalign, which you need to wear for about 2 weeks.
When you wear the Invisalign, it will exert a strong pressure on your teeth therefore allowing them to move in their desired position. These can be used for correcting underbite, crossbite and overbite cases. After 2 whole weeks of usage, your aligners should have already served their purpose so they will be replaced with a brand new set.
Compared to regular braces, these smooth and removable aligners won’t make you irritated with the feeling of having brackets or wires poking in your mouth. Simply put, these are more comfortable.
In addition, patients using the Invisalign won’t need to worry about food restrictions since they can remove their aligners when they’re eating. These aligners won’t only straighten your teeth, it can also enable the user to maintain their regular brushing and flossing habits because they’re removable.
We understand that having beautifully straight and pearly white teeth can affect a person’s professional and social life which is why we also offer Invisalign to our teenager patients.
Our Invisalign Teen is a great tool that’s perfectly designed for younger people. This enables the patient’s new molars to grow. This works by guiding the teeth into perfect position. This will lessen the possibility of any misalignment and crookedness in the future. For those who will be using the Invisalign, they will have to wear new sets of aligners every two weeks until their teeth have finally straightened into its desired position.
During your consultation visit, one of our expert dentists will examine and evaluate your case whether Invisalign will be beneficial for you or not.
